The first two funds, the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund (Superannuation), and the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund (Retirement), are both defined benefit funds with guaranteed predictable benefits. The Superannuation Fund was established in 1942 as a defined benefit fund, and provides lump sum and monthly pension benefits upon the retirement or death of members, calculated on salary and service. The Retirement Fund was established in 1967 as a defined contribution fund and was subsequently converted into a defined benefit fund for the lower income members, in 1975. Finally, the third fund, the KwaZulu-Natal Joint Municipal Provident Fund, is a defined contribution fund. In the Provident Fund.
